Hidetaka Miyazaki recently responded to rumors about a "foot fetish" surrounding his works. He stated that he is unsure where such claims originated, explaining that the character designs in question are intended to express aspects of humanity or human existence that are difficult to describe in words.
This topic stems from a long-running joke within the Souls-like player community. Characters such as the Fire Keeper from Demon's Souls, Sister Friede, Gwynevere, and Priscilla from the Dark Souls series, as well as Malenia from Elden Ring, all appear barefoot or with fully rendered foot models.
In an interview with The Guardian in September 2026, Hidetaka Miyazaki was originally answering questions about why the visual motif of "hands" frequently appears in his works. He mentioned that he may not always consciously employ these elements, suggesting that subconscious influences could also be at play. He then voluntarily addressed the online rumors about his alleged preference for feet, stating that he genuinely does not know where such claims came from.
According to Hidetaka Miyazaki, these character appearances represent a broader expression of humanity rather than a personal preference for any specific body part. He aims to present the essence of humanity, which is difficult to describe directly, through character imagery, including recurring themes such as "destruction and rebirth."
Miyazaki noted that he later realized the theme of "destruction and rebirth" has been present in many of his works. This theme will also be applied from a broader perspective in his new title, Duskbloods, becoming one of the philosophical issues explored in the game.
When discussing the direction of his game worlds, Miyazaki stated that he prefers to depict dark futures. However, portraying destruction and decay also leaves room for rebirth; he finds beauty in the small, fleeting hopes that exist within the darkness.
