To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Civilization series, 2K and Firaxis Games have launched a major promotional event on Steam: Civilization VII is available for limited-time free play from September 3 to 10, with the Standard Edition and Settler's Edition both discounted by 50% (original price 298 yuan, now 149 yuan). The promotion runs until September 17.
However, since its release on February 10, 2025, Civilization VII has received sharply divided reviews. On Steam, over 44,300 user reviews maintain a "Mixed" overall rating, with Simplified Chinese reviews being predominantly negative. Frequent player complaints include Denuvo DRM (limited to five activations within 24 hours), mandatory linking of 2K accounts, and the myriad technical and balance issues that have persisted throughout the year and a half since launch.
Even greater backlash stems from the overhaul of core mechanics. The game forcibly divides campaigns into three eras—Ancient, Exploration, and Modern—and requires players to switch civilizations with each era—a design widely criticized as "plagiarizing Humankind," completely shattering the series' immersive experience of "guiding a single civilization through millennia." Additionally, issues such as unbalanced influence resources, an economy overly reliant on international trade routes, a bloated and complex interface, and a lack of freedom during era transitions have faced repeated criticism.
The pricing of DLCs has further fueled player outrage. Individual DLCs like "Paths to Power" and "Commanders & Civilians" are priced as high as 149 yuan, each containing only two leaders, four civilizations, and four wonders. The community directly compares these to expansion packs for competitors like Total War: Warhammer III, which offer far richer content and deeper mechanics at similar prices, while 2K merely provides piecemeal additions reminiscent of "toothpaste-squeezing."
In response to the overwhelming backlash, the development team plans to hold a showcase at PAX West 2026 in Seattle on September 5. Creative Director Ed Beach, Lead Producer Tom Shaw, and Game Director Matt Owens will attend to discuss future plans following the May "Time Tested" patch and the August 13 Hotfix 1.4.2. However, player reaction on the official Steam forums has been lukewarm, with some describing the upcoming presentation as "like an execution squad"—either comprehensively rebalance the game or directly announce Civilization VIII.
Currently, the sale also covers previous titles in the series: Civilization VI is 90% off, Civilization V is 75% off, and Civilization IV is 80% off. The free trial for Civilization VII lasts for seven days until September 10, with all progress and 37 achievements carrying over upon purchase.
