Final Fantasy VII Rebirth showcases cutscene skip feature, sparking mixed reactions from players

Square Enix unveiled gameplay footage of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth during the PlayStation State of Play event and confirmed that the game supports accelerated playback for cutscenes. This optional feature immediately sparked controversy among some players.

This showcase marked one of the most comprehensive gameplay reveals for the title so far. Square Enix also announced an April release date and confirmed that story DLC would follow after launch, but the cutscene acceleration feature became the focal point of player discussion.

A player posted on social media that "the game is truly dead," with the post receiving around 1,700 likes. Some replies also expressed dissatisfaction with this feature. Some opinions argue that highlighting the fast-forward button in major trailers undermines the impact of narrative cutscenes.

Into the Aether host Brendon Bigley stated that while he was looking forward to the game, he believed adding such a feature was "an admission of failure." Game Informer video editor Eric Van Allen criticized the idea, arguing that bringing the habit of speeding through videos into game dialogue is inappropriate.

Cutscene acceleration is not a new design choice for the series; Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth already offered similar features. Players can choose whether or not to use it, and it does not forcibly alter the standard playback experience.
