Recently, a Reddit user posted about a computer that had been in continuous use for eight years and had become "hairy." The CPU cooler was covered in thick dust and hair, and the thermal paste had completely dried out, yet the computer was still functioning normally.
It is reported that the user discovered this situation while helping a friend replace their computer case. After opening up his friend's old machine, which had been running continuously for eight years, he found that the CPU cooler's fins were completely covered in thick dust, pet hair, and household debris.
Moreover, due to the high density of accumulated dust, a blanket-like layer had formed on the surface of the heatsink, completely sealing off the gaps originally designed for airflow. In this situation, even if the fans run at full speed, they cannot dissipate any heat.
Even more surprisingly, after removing the cooler, it was found that the thermal paste between the CPU and the cooler base had completely dried up and disappeared. The user then advised his friend to reapply thermal paste, but the friend refused, citing the hassle of buying a tube of paste, insisting that "since the computer has worked fine for the past eight years, there's no need to touch it."
From a technical perspective, the reason this computer survived under such extreme lack of maintenance is mainly due to the thermal protection mechanisms of modern processors. When temperatures get too high, the CPU actively reduces its frequency and power consumption to prevent hardware damage.
For light-load scenarios such as web browsing, document processing, or video watching, even with significantly reduced cooling efficiency, the performance after throttling is still sufficient to handle tasks, and users may not notice any obvious lag.
In the end, the user failed to persuade his friend to replace the thermal paste. Currently, the old computer has been put back into use after simple external dust removal.
