Major Breakthrough in OLED: Lifespan Extended by 2.4x, Brightness Increased by 1.6x

As Chinese panel manufacturers accelerate their penetration into the mid-to-low-end OLED market, South Korea's display industry is intensively launching next-generation OLED technologies, aiming to reverse the competitive landscape with high-barrier, cutting-edge solutions.

At the 26th International Meeting on Information Display (IMID 2026) held at the BEXCO Convention Center in Busan, LG Display made its global debut of FLiPP, a next-generation OLED patterning process dubbed "dream technology."

This technology can form red, green, and blue (RGB) pixels without using a Fine Metal Mask (FMM), promising to break the core dominance of FMM in OLED production over the past decade.

Traditional FMM methods have obvious limitations: expensive masks need to be custom-made when panel size or resolution changes, and metal meshes tend to sag at large sizes, leading to color mixing defects.

LG Display combined its mass production experience with 8.5-generation TV white OLED panels and semiconductor photolithography processes to develop "Flip Technology," which directly utilizes 8.5-generation mother glass to complete pixel patterning without requiring an FMM.

According to official data, FLiPP can increase the aperture ratio (the proportion of actual light-emitting area) by approximately 55%, boost brightness by 1.6 times, extend lifespan by 2.4 times, and reduce power consumption by 13%, offering significantly superior overall performance compared to existing solutions.

According to data from the Korea Display Industry Association, South Korea's share of the global OLED market remained around 80% before 2021, but has dropped significantly to about 60% since 2024, as Chinese manufacturers rapidly expand in the mid-to-low-end market leveraging government subsidies and scaled cost advantages.

Industry insiders pointed out: "Although Chinese panel manufacturers are actively seizing the mid-to-low-end OLED market, South Korean companies, with their differentiated breakthroughs in high-end technology, are expected to become game-changers in the market landscape." The implementation of frontier technologies like FLiPP is seen as a key measure for South Korea's display industry to consolidate its technological moat and counter share loss.
