Bungie owns a large headquarters building in Bellevue, Washington, a city with high real estate prices. In 2021, Bungie more than doubled its office space due to the continued success of Destiny 2 during the pandemic. However, in recent years, Bungie's game sales have declined, leading to over 600 layoffs in just three years, and the company is now considering subleasing most of the office space it no longer needs.
A Bungie spokesperson told GamePost, the outlet that first reported the news: “Bungie is considering subleasing its campus in Bellevue, Washington. The studio transitioned to a digital-first model several years ago, and this move reflects the team's evolving office needs and the effectiveness of remote collaboration. Bungie will continue to maintain a physical office in Bellevue.”
The Bungie headquarters includes dedicated fitness areas, climbing walls, and game testing zones. According to GamePost, the leasing brochure also mentions a motion capture studio, streaming studio, audio and foley rooms (professional sound recording areas), capture equipment, and editing suites.
From Surplus to Layoffs
Sony acquired Bungie for $3.6 billion . Four years later, these investments have all failed. The Destiny franchise has never developed into a cross-media cash cow. All non-Destiny projects in development were canceled except for one. Sony even decided to officially halt the development of Destiny 2. Currently, only the extraction shooter Marathon remains, but it also seems destined to be scrapped.
At its peak during the pandemic, Bungie had over 1,500 employees. Successive rounds of massive layoffs in 2023, 2024, and 2026 reduced the headcount by at least 600, not including normal attrition or Sony transferring some employees to other departments under PlayStation. It now appears that Bungie's employee count is closer to around 500.
It is also a “digital-first” workplace that supports remote work, which is undoubtedly a smart move for attracting top talent and avoiding the high costs of hiring exclusively in the Greater Seattle area. But perhaps this should have been considered before the studio massively expanded its physical headquarters.
