Although Cygames' recent releases like "Uma Musume Pretty Derby" and "Granblue Fantasy: Relink" have been well-received by players, it is also an undeniable fact that the company has publicly announced long-term delays for several of its titles in pursuit of ultimate quality. To alleviate the burden of high expectations surrounding its main projects and improve product launch efficiency, Cygames has officially launched a new publishing label, Cygames Edge, focusing on small to medium-sized internally developed games. "Where the Seeds Fall" is the label's inaugural project.
"Granblue Fantasy: Relink" was initially developed by PlatinumGames before transitioning to in-house development at Cygames. The project took eight years from its initial announcement to its official release in summer 2024 (with an expansion released earlier this year). Meanwhile, "Project Awakening" and "Garnet Arena: Mages of Magicary," announced in 2016 and 2021 respectively, have shown almost no new developments over the years, aside from official confirmations that they are still in development.
Cygames Edge will not involve itself in the AAA projects handled by other departments within the company. Instead, it focuses on smaller games, employing lean teams to release unique titles at a steady pace. "Where the Seeds Fall" fits this positioning perfectly: it is a short action-adventure platformer with a playtime of approximately three hours, centered around descending along a towering giant tree. The game also includes additional modes such as time trials, catering to speedrunners and enhancing replay value. This approach mirrors similar initiatives by Japanese publishers like Bandai Namco's GYAAR Studio, allowing small development teams to hone their skills through complete, independent projects. This title was created through a collaboration between Cygames developers and ZEREO.
To uphold its commitment to rapid releases, these games were officially unveiled during Sony's recent State of Play presentation. They will launch digitally on Steam, PS5, and Switch 2 on November 5. As a small-scale trial run—and likely not the last one—it remains to be seen what future titles Cygames Edge will bring to the table.
