NVIDIA has released the GeForce Hotfix 616.86 driver, based on the latest GeForce Game Ready 616.64 WHQL driver. Since the launch of the GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs based on the Blackwell architecture, NVIDIA has frequently released Hotfix drivers, issuing them 11 times in total, with 5 of those releases occurring this year.
NVIDIA regularly releases graphics drivers, typically when new GPUs or games are launched. Occasionally, they release Hotfix drivers to address specific games or newly discovered vulnerabilities, aiming to resolve critical issues identified and fixed by their engineers. These are usually minor fixes for specific problems and do not involve any major issues. The GeForce Hotfix 616.86 driver primarily addresses the following issues:
Issues fixed include:
Intermittent flickering may be observed in browsers when visiting certain websites. [6673430]
Fixed an issue where virtual displays could not be created after updating to driver version 616.56. [6674464]
Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) sessions may display a black screen after updating to driver version 616.56. [6687328]
NVIDIA reiterates that GeForce Hotfix drivers are considered beta versions and undergo a much less rigorous quality assurance process than standard WHQL drivers. The 616.86 driver does not include any other fixes or feature enhancements. Users who are not experiencing related issues with their specific GPU models do not need to download this update and can wait for the next WHQL or Game Ready version.
It's not surprising that NVIDIA released this GeForce Hotfix driver, as many users had previously reported display issues after installing version 616.56. The most common symptom was random flickering, which occurred not only in games but also on the desktop and while watching videos. Additionally, screen brightness would suddenly change; when browsing the web or performing other daily desktop tasks, the screen might briefly go black or noticeably dim, requiring mouse movement to restore normalcy.
