Riot Co-Founder Says League of Legends MMORPG Is Still in Development; Players Question Its One-Year Operation

Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill stated that the MMO set in the League of Legends universe is still in development, five years after its initial official announcement. Within the studio, the project is jokingly referred to as their "Holy Grail," as it has proven to be an extremely challenging endeavor.

"We know what players expect and want from this game. It all comes down to our team and whether we can get Everythinggj right," Merrill said during a conversation with Greg Miller at PAX. According to him, Riot understands the scale of the task and is prepared to overcome difficulties and see it through. Merrill also expressed that he believes the future of the project is "incredibly bright."

However, the executive's remarks were met with skepticism from many players. The community for 2XKO, the fighting game within the same IP universe, reacted particularly strongly, as Riot had recently announced that it would cease active development of 2XKO due to insufficient player numbers. The game had only officially launched in late 2025. Furthermore, the MMO itself has undergone significant changes over the years. In 2024, Riot essentially started from scratch, putting the project through a major reboot. Additionally, several core developers left the team, and former MMO producer Greg Street had warned as early as 2022 that the game's release was not guaranteed.

Nevertheless, in January 2026, former World of Warcraft producer Raymond Bartos joined Riot, reigniting hopes for the project's successful completion. Riot has not yet announced a release date or revealed specific details about the game itself.
