Recently, a large number of Switch 2 players reported that their consoles were suddenly banned from using Nintendo Online services. Error code 2124-4508 prevented access to the eShop, downloading purchased digital content, and installing games via Game-Key Cards. Although such bans are usually associated with running pirated games, many affected users insisted they only used legitimate cartridges and were never involved with any illegal software.
Since September 5, complaints about Switch 2 bans have surged on social media. The Switch Help section on Reddit has become the main hub for affected players, who are located across Asia, Europe, and the United States. A user with the ID OutlandishnessHour37 stated that he purchased a brand-new Switch 2 in June 2026 through the Indonesian e-commerce platform Tokopedia. All his physical games were legitimate, and while one Nintendo Switch Online one-year redemption code provided by the same seller might have come from a third-party channel, it was definitely not a pirated game.
Even more puzzling is the case of Japanese player MathPrestigious, who purchased a console and brand-new games such as "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" from the well-known retailer Yodobashi Camera, only to face the same ban just two days later. Nintendo customer service claimed that illegal software was detected on his device, but the player firmly denied this.
It is currently difficult to accurately estimate the scale of the bans from social media, but Chinese players have reported that at least 150 users on Xiaohongshu have experienced blocked online functionality. Meanwhile, users in North America and Europe have also begun reporting the same issue.
Speculation suggests that these bans may be related to Nintendo's crackdown on MIG Flash flashcarts. After a firmware update in June 2025, this device was able to run pirated Switch games on the Switch 2, leading Nintendo to ban related consoles in batches. However, a large number of users affected in this round purchased their consoles through legitimate channels and used genuine cartridges, which is significantly different from previous situations.
As of the morning of September 7 (Beijing Time), multiple Reddit users reported that their Switch 2 consoles had been successfully unbanned. Nintendo customer service responded that the bans were caused by a server-side error and not due to user violations. The unban process is still ongoing, but there has been no official announcement fully explaining the cause of the incident or the scope of those affected.
It is important to note that these bans are based on hardware identification codes, so switching accounts does not bypass them. If not unbanned, affected players will be unable to redownload purchased digital content or install games from Game-Key Cards, resulting in significant actual losses.
As of now, Nintendo has not issued an official statement regarding this large-scale wrongful banning incident.
