According to multiple foreign media outlets, A24 has officially greenlit the production of "The Backrooms 2," with young director Kane Parsons returning to helm the sequel following the massive success of the first film. Although an official announcement has not yet been released, insiders say it is imminent.
According to reports, Parsons has signed a deal with A24 worth up to eight figures to ensure his return to direct the sequel. Earlier rumors suggested that A24 offered a three-year first-look deal valued at up to $65 million to secure the 21-year-old director. Parsons was originally developing an original film with "Longlegs" director Osgood Perkins, but that project has been temporarily put on hold, making "The Backrooms 2" his top priority.
The rapid progression of the sequel is not surprising. As early as March this year, Parsons stated that filming a sequel was "not just an option, but an intention since 2022." He believes the first film was merely the first step in the overall narrative, "unable to touch the true core of this idea within the runtime of a single movie," and dreams of developing "The Backrooms" into a franchise.
The first "Backrooms" film was made on a budget of approximately $10 million and grossed $394 million worldwide, becoming A24's highest-grossing film in history. The film starred Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, and others.
