Zach Cregg's new Resident Evil movie will feature original characters and a new story. It will not include existing characters from the video games, nor will it retell plots already presented in the games.
Once this adaptation direction was confirmed, Craig continued to face skepticism from some Resident Evil fans. The controversy mainly centered on the film's connections to the original characters and story.
Rather than directly adapting the game's plot, Craig chose to carve out his own storyline within the Resident Evil universe, telling a brand-new horror story.
Although the characters and plot are original, the film will still reference some classic tropes from the Resident Evil game series, maintaining ties to the original work within its new story.
