Windows 11 has fixed the long-criticized forced update behavior. The Shut down and Restart buttons no longer install downloaded updates but instead perform the shutdown or restart operation directly.
Previously, once a Windows update was downloaded, clicking either Shut down or Restart would cause the system to install the update before executing the action, turning shutdowns into lengthy waits.
Many users have been "trained" by this behavior into a conditioned reflex, expecting every shutdown to involve an update installation and restart process.
Microsoft stated in April this year that the power menu would clearly distinguish between power actions and update actions, offering four options: Shut down, Restart, Update and shut down, and Update and restart.
Selecting Shut down or Restart will execute the corresponding action directly without triggering update installation. If users wish to install updates, they must actively choose Update and shut down or Update and restart.
This change first appeared in the Windows 11 Build 26300.8289 Insider preview in April and is now being officially rolled out to users. Microsoft states that this move aims to make the power menu more predictable.
