Recently, at the PAX West event, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Civilization series, 2K and Firaxis Games officially announced the next phase of update plans for Sid Meier's Civilization® VII (hereinafter referred to as Civilization VII), along with a historic low 50% discount and one-week free trial on Steam!
From the upcoming version 1.5.0 update launching later this month, to the major free update "Arc of Tomorrow" planned for 2027 which adds a brand-new fourth era, the "Atomic Age," and further to the first paid expansion pack "Out of This World" that expands the civilization's reach into the solar system, Civilization VII will continue to enrich its content and gameplay through three major updates, opening up an even grander journey of civilization for players.
Three Major Updates Coming Soon, Civilization VII Continues to Evolve
Free Update Version 1.5.0: Real Earth Map Coming Soon
The update closest to players is version 1.5.0, scheduled for release later this month.
This update will further optimize the gaming experience across multiple aspects including maps, resources, diplomacy, and UI, with the highly anticipated Real Earth Map officially joining the game.
In the Real Earth Map, land, terrain, and resources will be generated based on the real world, and the civilization chosen by the player will start in the location corresponding to its true historical origin. Natural wonders will appear randomly in areas consistent with their real-world geographical locations, enhancing historical immersion while ensuring each game retains a sense of freshness and variation.
In addition to the Real Earth Map, version 1.5.0 will also bring:
● Brand New "Unknown Lands" and "Random" Maps: Using Voronoi map generation algorithms to make map layouts more diverse and natural;
● Resource Generation Optimization: Further improve map loading and generation speed, while making resource distribution more varied;
● Diplomacy System Update: Players can use influence to maintain alliances without being forced into wars initiated by their allies;
● UI Experience Optimization: Improvements to tile tooltips, settlement banners, and game settings interfaces, along with the addition of a new tile ruler tool to help players plan city layouts more conveniently.
Whether you wish to experience a real-world map with greater historical immersion, or pursue more convenient city building and diplomatic experiences, version 1.5.0 will further perfect the basic gameplay experience of Civilization VII.
2027 Free Update "Arc of Tomorrow": The Atomic Age Opens a New Era for Civilization
If version 1.5.0 focuses on the continuous optimization of current gameplay, then the major free update "Arc of Tomorrow," planned for 2027, will further expand the historical boundaries of Civilization VII.
The biggest change in "Arc of Tomorrow" is the official addition of a new fourth era to the game—the Atomic Age.
This era spans roughly from the 1950s to the mid-21st century, allowing players to continue writing their civilization's story into the modern era and experience technology, society, and international dynamics that are distinctly different from previous ages.
With the arrival of the Atomic Age, the game will also add a large amount of exclusive content, including new buildings, units, technology trees, civic trees, wonders, social policies, narrative events, music, as well as a batch of Atomic Age civilizations and leaders. Among them, the series' classic leader Gandhi will return in this update.
Centered on the theme of modern civilization development, "Arc of Tomorrow" will also add several new gameplay features:
● Expanded Nuclear Gameplay: Adding more offensive and defensive means as well as related units, creating more complex strategic balances between civilizations;
● Civilization Empire Management Tools: Players can acknowledge the independent status of their settlements, releasing them as city-states, making new strategic choices between civilization size, loyalty, and long-term development;
● Blockbuster Films: Film crews will search for suitable filming locations based on film genres, bringing different benefits to the civilization based on the final quality of the film;
● Crafting Resources: Players can combine specific bulk commodities according to recipes to produce new powerful resources, such as enriched uranium.
With the addition of the Atomic Age, the developmental journey of civilizations in Civilization VII will extend into modern society for the first time. Players will need to focus not only on city building, technological development, and military expansion, but also face more diverse civilizational issues such as nuclear energy, cultural industries, and modern resource management.
2027 Paid DLC "Out of This World": From Building Civilization to Stepping Towards the Stars
The development of civilization will not stop at Earth.
Also planned for release in 2027, the first paid expansion pack, Sid Meier's Civilization VII: Out of This World, will further extend the scope of exploration in Civilization VII into space.
The theme of "Out of This World" revolves around the relationship between humanity, space, and the environment. As the ages progress, players will evolve from initially observing and understanding the starry sky, to developing aerospace technology, establishing their own space agencies, and finally executing deep space missions covering the solar system.
Space exploration will also span multiple stages of civilization's development:
● Antiquity and Exploration Ages: Players can map the night sky, name celestial bodies, and gradually understand the solar system and their planet's position within it;
● Modern Age: Begin launching early space missions to near-Earth orbit and the Moon, laying the foundation for future deep space exploration;
● Atomic Age: Establish your own space agency and execute missions to different regions of the solar system, studying planetary characteristics and potential resources, feeding space exploration results back into earthly civilization development.
At the same time, "Out of This World" is not just about "going to space," but will also deepen the relationship between players and the Earth's environment.
The expansion pack will introduce new environmental adaptability gameplay. Through new units, technologies, and civil engineering facilities, players can adjust terrain and tile bonuses within their territories to cope with natural disasters exacerbated by global warming, and even have the chance to reverse the trend of global warming.
As civilizations improve their development capabilities in different ecological zones, they will gain additional gameplay advantages in those respective areas.
From gazing at the stars, to setting foot on the Moon, and exploring the solar system, "Out of This World" will further expand the imaginative space of "how far human civilization can go" in Civilization VII.
From Earth to Deep Space, The Future of Civilization VII Continues
Version 1.5.0, "Arc of Tomorrow," and "Out of This World" represent three different directions of development for Civilization VII: optimizing existing gameplay experience, expanding civilizational historical eras, and breaking Earth's boundaries to explore the universe.
For players, the Real Earth Map will soon bring a more familiar and immersive stage for civilization; the Atomic Age in 2027 will allow civilizations to truly step into the modern world for the first time; and "Out of This World" will extend the endpoint of civilization's development from Earth further into the solar system.
From the birth of a city, to a civilization empire spanning ages, and finally stepping towards the stars and sea, the story of Civilization VII continues to unfold.
Three major updates are coming soon, and the future of Civilization VII is worth looking forward to.
