Cold Symmetry has added experimental adaptive difficulty to Mortal Shell II. This feature adjusts challenge intensity based on enemies defeated and locations where the player dies, reducing pressure during frustrating moments while presenting stronger foes to those on winning streaks.
Adaptive difficulty isn't enabled by default; players must opt in via the settings menu. Adjustments made by the system also gradually weaken over time, allowing the overall experience to slowly return to the game's standard balance.
When players struggle in combat, the system reduces enemy damage, health, and poise resistance. Once adjustments reach a certain threshold, the game also caps damage per hit, preventing one-shot kills when the player is at full health.
If players keep winning, the adjustments reverse: enemies deal more damage, are harder to kill, and resist stagger more easily. These enhancements aren't capped by standard difficulty limits; enemy strength continues to rise as long as players keep completing encounters without dying.
Adaptive difficulty can also be used alongside the extra high-difficulty option "Nightfall Mode." In this mode, the system can further increase the challenge but won't lower difficulty if the player struggles. The game currently doesn't indicate when adaptive adjustments take effect, though Cold Symmetry says it's working on corresponding indicators.
This patch also includes balance tweaks, bug fixes, stability improvements, and narrative-related changes. When using the Infinite Sigil for continuous parries, the timing window now extends into attack wind-up animations, allowing players to parry a sequence of incoming attacks rather than just the first hit.
Certain abilities of the Sarier shell have been buffed, while the Gneesa shell has been nerfed to prevent Infinite from gaining Resolve or repeatedly summoning Faithful clones. Updates including experimental adaptive difficulty are now live.
