On September 8, Capcom released a weapon introduction video for the Sword and Shield in Monster Hunter Wilds: Overcome, confirming the return of the series' classic "Coating" mechanic—making its reappearance after about ten years since Monster Hunter XX.
Weapon Introduction:
The video showcases the Sword and Shield's "Amplified Action" for the first time—a shield-bash charge forward, followed by a leap using the amplified bracer jet, leading into a falling shield strike, with smooth and fierce combos. The video also features an action where the player uses a slinger rope to hook onto and close in on monsters, reminiscent of the "Clutch Claw" system from Monster Hunter World: Iceborne.
Even more exciting for veteran players is the official return of the Sword and Shield-exclusive "Coating" system. Coatings are special items for the Sword and Shield in Monster Hunter X and Monster Hunter XX, applied to the blade to grant special effects for a limited time. Previous types included Critical Coating, Exhaust Coating, Power Coating, Mind's Eye Coating, and the Hunter Art "Chaos Coating".
The trailer also confirmed a new type of Coating with healing effects—not only does it restore Stamina upon use, but it also continuously recovers HP when attacking monsters. Whether previous types of Coatings will also return remains to be officially announced.
Monster Hunter Wilds is currently available on PC (Steam), PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The massive DLC, Overcome, is scheduled for release in 2027. With the Sword and Shield information now public, players are eagerly anticipating the introduction videos for the remaining weapons.
