Today (September 8), during the Zelda 40th Anniversary Special Direct, Nintendo unveiled new materials for The Legend of Zelda live-action film, confirming a release date of April 30, 2027. The movie is co-produced and distributed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures.
The film is directed by Wes Ball, known for the Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth plays Link, and Bo Bragason portrays Princess Zelda. Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad serve as producers, with Nintendo deeply involved in content oversight to ensure the adaptation remains faithful to the original worldbuilding. Sony handles global distribution.
Filming wrapped in New Zealand in April 2026, and the project is now in post-production for visual effects. The director stated that the film will emphasize the fantasy, nature, and sense of exploration in Hyrule, drawing on the romantic atmosphere of Studio Ghibli works rather than simply mimicking the epic battle style of The Lord of the Rings.
