Wizards of the Coast has revealed the core storyline and world setting for Magic: The Gathering – Reality Fracture. This new expansion will launch on October 2, 2026, concluding a three-year narrative arc, with Jace Beleren becoming the central figure in a crisis sweeping across the Multiverse.
After facing threats such as Nicol Bolas, the Eldrazi, and the Phyrexians, Jace concluded that addressing crises one by one was no longer sufficient. As "The Theorist," he created the "Echo Universe" to remove events and individuals that caused major disasters from history, hoping to establish a more ideal reality.
The Echo Universe is not merely a parallel world. Jace intends to overlay it onto existing reality, gradually replacing original locations, memories, and people, which means the current world will ultimately be erased. Wizards of the Coast portrays him as an opponent who believes he has found the ultimate solution, rather than a villain driven solely by power.
Chandra, Ajani, Garruk, and Vaska will join forces to stop Jace. Vaska initially supported the Echo Universe plan but later turned against it; Jace then created Tam, who would never betray him. However, after gaining a full personality and forming relationships with others, Tam began to question the purpose of his own creation.
Hexhold Academy is one of the main settings of this expansion, reshaped by Jace based on his own memories, fears, and insecurities. The academy is located within a colossal tower approximately ten thousand feet tall, with Jace's private sanctum at the summit; gravity inside the tower can change direction, and walls and floors may swap positions.
Compared to the original Strixhaven, Hexhold Academy is no longer just a magical university but a stricter, more militarized training system responsible for cultivating battle mages, healers, and strategists. The five colleges are led by five Sphinxes, each corresponding to fields such as future divination, arcane mathematics, linguistic attacks, construct manufacturing, and botanical healing.
Magic: The Gathering – Reality Fracture will also present alternate lives for several characters. Wizards of the Coast has previously showcased Blue Chandra, Black Garruk, White Liliana, and Red Ajani, confirming that these designs are not just changes in card colors, but results of the Echo Universe rewriting the characters' experiences.
