Ubisoft has begun testing a new Steam Direct Connect tool with Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. When launching the game from Steam, players no longer need to install or run the Ubisoft Connect PC client.

This tool is called "Ubisoft Connect Services," which Ubisoft describes as a simpler Steam launch solution. The relevant changes have been included in the update notes for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, making it the first title to participate in the test.

With the requirement for a standalone PC client removed, existing Ubisoft game features will remain intact, including cross-platform progression, cross-play, player security, challenges, and rewards. Players can jump straight into the game via Steam without needing to launch the Ubisoft client separately.

Ubisoft stated that the current release is just the initial version and a first step toward simplifying the Steam launch experience. The company will continue to adjust and refine this service, aiming to make the Steam experience smoother while retaining the features players commonly use.

This test will not be limited to Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. According to Ubisoft's announced plans, Ubisoft Connect Services will gradually expand to more Ubisoft titles on Steam in the future, though the specific list of covered games and rollout timeline have not yet been disclosed.
