This year's Gamescom faces a unique competitor, as GTA 6 will not be present at the exhibition. Rockstar Games has chosen to exclusively release an extended demo of GTA 6 on Netflix, before making it freely available on YouTube later. There are concerns that this blockbuster title will significantly divert online attention away from Gamescom.
Stefan Heikhaus, Brand Director of Gamescom, addressed these concerns in an interview. He acknowledged that GTA 6 is a benchmark title in the industry, akin to the North Star for gaming, and will inevitably draw some online traffic. However, he stated that this impact would only be short-term.
Heikhaus admitted, "The major GTA 6 announcements will certainly divert some attention away from Gamescom, but I am not worried about this. The value of Gamescom lies in allowing players to see hundreds or even thousands of different games. Most players are not interested in just one title. After viewing the GTA 6 content, people will still return their focus to Gamescom, where there are numerous world premieres, new trailers, and a vast amount of new content from hundreds of studios."
Exhibition Director Tim Endres added that while they welcome all major content coming to Gamescom, the current focus is on the event's diverse positioning. Over the past 15 years, the scale of independent games has expanded rapidly. This year's Gamescom features 1,600 exhibitors, aiming to provide a showcase for AAA titles, mid-sized teams, and indie works alike, without letting a single blockbuster define the entire event.
The Gamescom organizers view GTA 6 as another major event during Games Week rather than a direct threat. Many players also believe the two do not conflict; after watching the GTA 6 content, they will still look forward to reveals of other games at Gamescom.
GTA 6 will launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19. Gamescom 2026 will officially take place from August 27 to 31.
