Dragon Age: Origins Fan Decompilation Project Could Be the Closest Thing to a Remake

Running Dragon Age: Origins on PC in 2026 is a nightmare for average players, though tinkerers may find it enjoyable. Even 17 years after Marilyn Manson lent his voice to promote the game, the PC version remains plagued by bugs and frequent crashes. However, hope is on the horizon: six enthusiasts have embarked on this "Andrastian miracle" to benefit players, working to decompile the source code of Dragon Age: Origins. First exposed by PCGamesN, the project aims to reconstruct a version as close as possible to the game's original source code. After three years of development, progress is currently around 60%. One of the project's developers, Shot_Let_1344, stated that reaching 90% completion will take another year.

Although releasing an official remake of Dragon Age: Origins might be one of the easiest ways for Electronic Arts to help repay the $20 billion debt incurred after the acquisition, the likelihood of an official remake is slim. On one hand, Dragon Age: The Veilguard underperformed in the market, so EA executives are likely uninterested in such projects. On the other hand, even if they wanted to proceed, the studio's core staff has already been drastically reduced through layoffs.

In 2024, Jon Epple, Creative Director of Dragon Age: The Veilguard and a BioWare veteran, told Rolling Stone that few employees at the studio still understood how the Origins proprietary engine worked, making the remaster "far more difficult than the Mass Effect Legendary Edition." And that was just the situation in 2024. Since then, BioWare has intensified its layoffs, with all remaining developers fully dedicated to the studio's next Mass Effect title. For core Dragon Age fans, these fan-led decompilation projects are the only realistic hope for a better gameplay experience for this historically influential Western RPG.

Shot_Let_1344 stated on Reddit that once the project is complete, the potential for expansion is nearly limitless. "We can update the code to meet modern programming standards. We can add co-op support, such as creating independent inventory and loot systems, and remove the global pause mechanic. We could also add split-screen functionality and even develop a version compatible with mobile devices. As long as we have access to the source code, the possibilities for modifying the game are infinite."
