"Chronicles: Medieval" Combines Total War Command with Mount & Blade-Style Action, Launching in 2027

Recently, Danish indie studio Raw Power Games revealed new information about their sandbox strategy RPG, "Chronicles: Medieval." Set during the Hundred Years' War between England and France in the 14th–15th centuries, the game allows players to control three major factions: the Kingdom of England, the Kingdom of France, and the Holy Roman Empire. It is scheduled to launch on PC in Early Access in early 2027.

The standout feature of "Chronicles: Medieval" is its seamless dual-mode combat system, rather than two separate, disjointed modes. Before battle, players can use a top-down perspective similar to "Total War" to deploy units, plan formations, and set marching routes. Once combat begins, the camera seamlessly switches to third-person view, allowing players to personally take command as a cavalry leader charging into battle, while all previously issued tactical orders remain in effect in real-time. Players can freely switch between these two perspectives. The combat system includes a complete morale mechanic; killing enemy generals or successfully flanking can break enemy morale, causing entire armies to rout, allowing players to order pursuits. Surviving troops gain experience and level up, unlocking stronger attributes and advanced formation commands. A single battle can scale up to 2,000 units.

The game features a massive sandbox map covering Western Europe during the Middle Ages, with a total of 209 independent territories. Castles and coats of arms are heavily based on historical research. It employs a layered fog-of-war mechanism, where intelligence on previously explored areas expires over time. As players move to other regions, the internal political situation of the world changes dynamically; caravans, bandit camps, and other content refresh dynamically throughout the world. The development team emphasizes that the game's foundational framework is highly historically accurate, but once characters are created, the story's direction is entirely up to the player. It does not force adherence to real historical outcomes, allowing players to rewrite the course of the Hundred Years' War.

In terms of simulation and RPG mechanics, economy, diplomacy, and social dynamics are all integrated into the simulation system, with player choices creating ripple effects locally and across the entire continent. Players can rise to power, establish their own kingdom, and control territories and vassals. However, this is not purely a kingdom management simulator; state governance is largely handled through character dialogue and interpersonal interactions rather than complex numerical panels. Political and religious elements from the Church will appear, though the specific implementation of the religious system is still being refined. It is not merely a medieval life simulator; its core goal is to drive dynamic storytelling, ensuring each playthrough offers a distinctly different experience.

The development team revealed that new story chapters will continue to be added after the Early Access launch. They have actively collaborated with modders since the development phase, offering native support for comprehensive mod tools to encourage community-created content. The game has no preset linear main storyline; all narratives emerge from player actions. Many team members have contributed to the development of AAA titles such as "The Witcher 3," "Cyberpunk 2077," and "Red Dead Redemption."
