"World of Warcraft: Infinite" Adds Native Controller Support; Dev Team Says No Console Launch Soon

Blizzard will add comprehensive official controller support to World of Warcraft: Infinite, allowing players to use Xbox and PlayStation controllers. However, the development team has clearly stated that this feature is not intended for an imminent release on consoles or handheld PCs.

World of Warcraft is typically played with keyboard and mouse, requiring players to use numerous hotkeys to cast spells and perform other actions. World of Warcraft: Infinite marks the first time this MMO offers a relatively complete official controller control scheme, allowing players to seamlessly switch between keyboard/mouse and controller.

Lead Software Engineer Nora Valletta stated that the team views World of Warcraft: Infinite as the "third pillar" of World of Warcraft, and thus aims to explore different control schemes. Controller support, alongside options to switch between standard-definition and high-definition character models, as well as Classic mode and more modern low-friction control schemes, are all designed to let players choose their preferred way to play.

Lead Game Designer Tim Jones noted that controller functionality is also part of the game's accessibility design. The team has previously added improved colorblind modes and screen reader support, hoping that players with different control preferences and physical abilities can find a playstyle that suits them.

In terms of specific controls, the left bumper on the Xbox controller is used to select friendly targets, while the right bumper selects enemy targets; pressing the left stick enables auto-run, and pressing the right stick marks objects in the environment. Spells, attacks, and other primary actions are mapped to the D-pad and face buttons, with players able to switch between different action sets using the left and right triggers.

Valletta mentioned that players have previously created their own controller support solutions for World of Warcraft, and other MMOs have utilized controller controls for years; she herself has played Final Fantasy XIV using a PS4 controller. However, the team did not simply copy existing designs, but instead redesigned the controls around natural feel and scenarios such as raid healing, conducting extensive internal testing.

World of Warcraft: Infinite is scheduled to begin testing on September 17, allowing players to experience controller controls firsthand, with the official launch date set for November 4.
