"Marvel's Wolverine" Criticized for Lack of Originality; Players Say AAA Games Are Suffering from Aesthetic Fatigue

Marvel's Wolverine is set to launch on PS5 on September 15. Recently, a user on the international Reddit forum posted that Marvel's Wolverine suffers from severe homogenization, bluntly stating that AAA games have fallen into aesthetic fatigue.

Players complained that Marvel's Wolverine completely follows the fixed formula of recent superhero AAA titles: photorealistic graphics, standardized light and heavy attack combos, and cookie-cutter skill tree upgrades. Villains all sport the same gray-black industrial armor and mask designs, protagonists are directly modeled from real-life scans, and there is heavy reuse of photogrammetry assets and marketplace resources, severely compressing creative space.

The serious main narrative is paired with fragmented meme-like Easter eggs. Tropes similar to those in Marvel's Spider-Man, such as selfies and fun character interactions, are repeatedly reused, allowing players to predict the entire flow and plot direction just from gameplay snippets.

Some commenters lamented that the current AAA market no longer serves core enthusiasts; publishers can reliably rake in sales by relying solely on famous IPs and piling on visual effects. The assembly-line model raises the baseline quality of games but locks the ceiling on creativity, gradually exhausting player goodwill and inducing a strong sense of burnout.

Some players expressed that after seeing so many standardized AAA titles, they have grown tired of repetitive gameplay and narrative tropes, hoping developers will break free from rigid templates to deliver differentiated innovation. Others acknowledged Insomniac Games' production prowess, noting that mechanics like the feral claw combat, ray-traced graphics, and self-healing suit still offer enjoyable gameplay. They argued that assembly-line production is simply the norm as the industry matures, and one shouldn't entirely dismiss the quality of the work.
