The PlayStation player community is launching an online protest campaign called "#PSBlackout," urging PS players worldwide to stop logging in, playing games, and making purchases from August 23rd to 30th (or extended to September 1st) to express their dissatisfaction with several of Sony's policies. Before the campaign was launched, an online petition demanding that Sony reverse its decision to discontinue disc production had already garnered over 370,000 signatures.
The direct trigger for this protest was Sony's previous announcement that it plans to stop producing PlayStation physical discs by 2028 and fully transition to digital distribution. Although this decision sparked widespread opposition from players, Sony's Chief Financial Officer, Lin Tao, had previously stated clearly that the company had not seen any impact on its business from the backlash and refused to change course.
The campaign organizer, "Does It Play?", issued a statement on social media stating that the protest's goals extend beyond the discontinuation of discs. The organizers also targeted Sony's digital sales model, particularly its Terms of Service, which explicitly state that digital PlayStation software is "licensed to players" rather than "sold to players," meaning the license can be revoked if an account is banned or closed.
The organizers called out: "Sony wants to abandon its fans? Then let them taste their own medicine! Together with other creators, we are calling for a one-week #PSBlackout in August. Do not log in to any Sony platforms, do not play games, and do not make purchases."
This protest has also sparked controversy within the PlayStation community. Critics point out that a short-lived boycott with a clear deadline is unlikely to have a substantial impact on a giant like Sony. After all, Sony currently has approximately 125 million monthly active users, so a week's worth of user churn might be just a ripple in the vast sea of data.
However, supporters argue that the symbolic significance of the event outweighs its practical effects—it sends a clear signal to Sony that the deep concerns of the core player base about a fully digital future are far from subsiding.
Sony is not the only manufacturer pushing for full digitization. Microsoft and some other game companies are also actively preparing for a disc-less future. However, as a platform with a large community of physical collection enthusiasts, every step PlayStation takes towards digitization tends to strike a more sensitive nerve among players.
