Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, announced new details regarding the game's storage size, physical edition, and additional content. The game is expected to require approximately 200GB of storage, and it has been confirmed that two character-focused story DLCs will be released.
Naoki Hamaguchi stated that storage requirements are still being adjusted, but the game could ultimately reach around 200GB. All physical editions will require additional downloads and cannot be installed solely from the disc. The team did not want to compress the game's scale to fit on a disc, while still wishing to offer a physical product to players.
Discussing the differences between producing digital and full-disc versions, Naoki Hamaguchi noted that disc production requires completing various performance checks and scheduling about three months in advance; purely downloadable versions allow fixes to continue up until the day of release. He emphasized that this was merely an explanation of one advantage of digital distribution from a developer's perspective, not a declaration that one method is superior to the other.
The game plans to release two story DLCs, delving deeper into the characters of Vincent and Sephiroth. Naoki Hamaguchi likened their scope to the "Intermission" chapter of Final Fantasy VII Remake, but did not reveal whether the stories take place in the past or present. He has previously stated that the base game will provide a definitive conclusion to the trilogy, leaving no ending elements for the DLCs to fill in.
During the Tokyo Game Show 2026 public demo, the on-site version focused on earlier chapters, allowing players to experience Cid's controls, storyline, and basic gameplay. The version previously provided to media started from Chapter 4, offering greater access and using level restrictions in certain areas to convey the scale of the world. The game also marks objectives and rewards to help players choose the content they wish to complete.
The piano minigame from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will also be expanded in the new title, with added content related to Tifa. Playing the piano segments will allow players to learn more about Tifa, though other specific design details have not yet been announced.
