Recently, Thomas Mahler, director of the Ori series, clarified that rumors about the development of 'Ori 3' are untrue, while revealing that Moon Studios has internally discussed buying back the series' IP.
Recent rumors suggest that Xbox may announce the revival of a classic IP at the upcoming Gamescom event, with a team under Saber Interactive developing a new entry in the Ori series, potentially making its official debut at the Xbox Developer Direct this fall. In response to these rumors, the CEO of Moon Studios has spoken out.
Mahler responded to the rumors with two consecutive tweets on X. He first stated that he had never heard of any plans from Microsoft to revive the series, and revealed that Moon Studios has internally discussed the possibility of buying back the 'Ori' IP.
"Once again, due to rumors circulating online, many people have been asking me about 'Ori 3'... As before, I know nothing about it."
"I think Microsoft should have learned their lesson after spending billions on 343 Industries for Halo without recapturing its former glory—only the right people should handle these IPs, otherwise, it will undoubtedly result in poorly made content."
"Internally, we've been discussing the possibility of buying back this IP. I doubt other studios could really do it justice, so bringing Ori 'home' to Moon Studios is the most logical choice!"
In a second tweet, Mahler more directly denied these rumors, calling them "nonsense." However, he also mentioned that Gareth Coker, the composer for the series, even believes it's time for a new installment.
