Recently, Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, explained the decision to release two story DLCs for the game. He stated that players can experience the full main story without purchasing the DLC; the additional content will not rewrite the ending.

After the game was announced at this year's Summer Game Fest, the team received numerous questions from players and media: with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth being the final part of the trilogy, would there still be DLC? The team had not previously decided to create these two additional content pieces for the game.
The team currently prioritizes the development of the main game, and the two DLCs have not yet entered the development phase. Naoki Hamaguchi stated that the team has no plans for specific content for any further DLCs at this time.
The two announced DLCs will focus on Sephiroth, and Vincent and the Turks respectively. The Sephiroth episode is planned for release in winter 2027, while the Vincent and Turks episode is scheduled for spring 2028, both launching after the main game.
Naoki Hamaguchi further explained that the DLC aims to allow players to learn more about these characters, rather than rewriting the main story's ending or changing how players interpret it. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is scheduled to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on April 8, 2027.
