Reports indicate that Disney has selected Jon Watts to direct the first film of a new Star Wars trilogy. This trilogy is said to continue the Skywalker Saga, but the project has not yet received official approval from Disney.
News about Lucasfilm preparing a new Star Wars film was initially disclosed by Daniel Richtman and later confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. Watts previously directed the Spider-Man trilogy starring Tom Holland and contributed to the 2024 series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. If this collaboration proceeds, he will once again be involved in a Star Wars production.
The new trilogy is currently untitled and will be written by Simon Kinberg, who previously worked on Star Wars Rebels and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Specific plot details have not been revealed, but reports indicate that Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as the Jedi Rey Skywalker in the new story.
Current director announcements only concern the first film, and it remains unclear when the new chapter will begin. According to sources cited by The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has not yet officially greenlit the project.
The project is still in early development, but The Hollywood Reporter states that it is further along than most other Star Wars projects. Currently ahead of it is Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, which is scheduled for release on May 28, 2027.
