Blizzard introduced Diablo V at BlizzCon 2026: players will use a mobile caravan as their base while exploring procedurally generated maps. The game is still in early development but has entered full production, with a planned release in spring 2029.
The new game's story begins with Diablo already victorious. The Lord of Terror has conquered the land, and humanity continues to resist. Game Director Joe Shely, Narrative Director Jennifer Brandes Hepler, and Executive Producer Matt Zitterman discussed the new title's design direction.
Instead of being stationed in a single town in Sanctuary, players will travel with a caravan. Joe Shely stated that players and the caravan must gather strength on their journey to ultimately overthrow Diablo; the regions they pass through will not be permanently liberated as a result. After players leave, those areas will remain uninhabited, demons will still roam, and they may become dangerous again after some time.
Map design will also change. Diablo IV uses a handcrafted, fixed open world, whereas Diablo V will use procedurally generated terrain. Combining mobile caravans with changing landscapes is one way the team hopes to ensure players still encounter unfamiliar areas during repeated explorations.
Jennifer Brandes Hepler also discussed the player's role in the story. She said that after the release of the Diablo IV expansion Vessel of Hatred earlier this year, players' reactions to becoming the center of the narrative reinforced the narrative team's confidence in the direction for Diablo V.
The team is also considering the game state after the main story concludes. Hepler stated that the main story ending should make players feel like they have accomplished something, while still leaving plenty to do.
