Recently, Sohei Niikawa, creator of the Disgaea series, stated that generative AI can help improve game development efficiency, but he has no intention of letting it write stories for him. For him, creating stories and characters is the very motivation behind making games.
Sohei Niikawa, creator of the original Disgaea, was asked in an interview with Dengeki Online whether AI is a threat or an aid. He believes that such tools can be used to improve production efficiency, provided they avoid illegal activities such as copyright infringement; he does not view AI as a threat.
When it comes to having AI complete an entire work, Sohei Niikawa stated that he does not believe he will see technology capable of producing works without any human involvement within his lifetime. He also has no desire to simply provide a plot and let tools generate the final product: while this approach might be suitable for mass production, it does not align with his creative goals.
Therefore, he currently does not use AI in his writing process. If he were to use it, it would only be for assistance with character names, titles, or research. He does not intend to select themes from so-called best-selling stories listed by tools, but rather prefers to decide what to write himself and craft the text personally.
Regarding what skills young developers should cultivate, Sohei Niikawa emphasized the importance of being able to conceive engaging gameplay experiences and judging which AI-generated proposals are suitable for a game. He believes that even when using tools to realize ideas, developers must still grasp the core of their work. His new title, Demon Night Fever, is scheduled for release on October 22.
