The screenshot is from X user Kran. When posting it, he asked whether releasing the image would still violate the non-disclosure agreement he had signed, given that the game had already been canceled.

According to the project's gameplay design, ten teams each consisted of four players. Teams advanced through different areas of the map, battling increasingly difficult enemies in PvE mode. Those who participated in playtests found the game enjoyable, but Ubisoft struggled to resolve issues with its replayability appeal.

Project U previously used the codename "Pathfinder." The project underwent major adjustments in late 2024, at which time Ubisoft still believed there was room for success in the PvE genre. In 2025, the game's opening cinematic leaked online, and Ubisoft subsequently had the video removed via a DMCA request.

Early versions of the project used the map from Ghost Recon: Wildlands as a foundation to save development time and costs. Later versions heavily borrowed mechanical creatures from the Horizon series for enemies, hoping to generate more player interest in the game.

After roughly seven years in development, Project U was canceled during Ubisoft's restructuring in early 2026. How players would traverse the map was one of the issues the project faced. Ubisoft insiders also stated that the project long lacked an overall direction and clear vision, encountering various problems throughout development.
