Japan's PC gaming market revenue more than doubled between 2021 and 2025, reaching around 300 billion yen in 2025. The Japanese gaming market has long been dominated by Sony and Nintendo consoles, making it difficult for Xbox and PC games to compete.
A preliminary report released by the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) at the Tokyo Game Show revealed that Japan's PC gaming revenue was approximately 132.1 billion yen in 2021, rising to about 300 billion yen by 2025. The full report is expected to be published in December.
On Steam in Japan, Counter-Strike 2, Apex Legends, and PUBG ranked as the top three best-sellers. All three titles are free-to-play and operate on a global scale.
In terms of total playtime, Left 4 Dead and Terraria lead the charts in Japan, with Stardew Valley also making the list. Among the top-grossing PC games, Monster Hunter Wilds is the only title developed in Japan.
During the same period, Japan's console market showed fluctuations aside from the Nintendo Switch 2, while the mobile gaming market saw an increase of approximately 4.5%.
