Nearly a decade after its release, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is set to return with the 5.0 Remaster. Early reviews praise the visual and combat improvements but point out significant stuttering and texture loading issues on the Xbox ROG Ally X handheld.
In terms of combat, the remaster adjusts sword swing combos and animation details. Reviewers noted that the dynamic camera moves more naturally during multi-enemy encounters, and there are changes to sign finisher animations and the visual effects of the Igni sign. The skill tree's basic structure remains familiar, but some abilities have been tweaked, making the choice between investing in Strong Attack and Fast Attack less disjointed than before.
Character progression has also been changed: toxicity, mutation, and bomb-related skills are now grouped under the Alchemy branch. The remaster also introduces an equipment appearance override feature, allowing players to retain item stats while applying the visual appearance of other weapons or armor; this feature is unlocked in Skellige later in the game.
Visual upgrades include improvements to lighting, vegetation, surface textures, and distant mountains. Compared to the 2022 next-gen update, reviewers feel the 5.0 remaster further enhances environmental detail. However, some scenes appear overly bright or dark, and the review build exhibited minor graphical glitches and gameplay issues.
The interface has been updated with a more compact layout, menus remember the last opened tab, and players can pick up loot from multiple enemies at once. Horseback movement is generally smoother, though Roach may still handle awkwardly during sharp turns.
The remaster supports Xbox Play Anywhere, making it easy to switch between Xbox consoles and PC. Handheld performance, however, is inconsistent: reviewers reported that the older version 4.04 ran smoothly on the Xbox ROG Ally X, while the remaster suffered from noticeable stuttering and failed to load some ground textures. The review also stated that existing owners can receive this upgrade for free.
