The first public playable Demo of "Path of the Yaoguai," a Journey to the West-themed Roguelike Card RPG developed by an independent team, is now officially available on Steam. "Path of the Yaoguai" is an indie game blending open-world exploration, deck building, Roguelike reincarnation, and CRPG progression. Breaking away from the traditional narrative framework of Journey to the West pilgrims, it focuses on the countless minor demons in the world. Players travel to a parallel mythological world of Journey to the West, born as a demon due to karmic reincarnation from a past life, and accidentally obtain the Reincarnation Box, mastering the power of infinite rebirth.
Here, there is no destined glory of retrieving scriptures, only a perilous land filled with gods and demons. You can reincarnate as various creatures such as spirit monkeys, wild boars, or plant spirits, struggling to survive amidst the power struggles between Immortals, Buddhas, and Demons. Achieving Buddhahood requires overcoming eighty-one tribulations, but becoming a demon is equally fraught with danger. Each cycle of life and death rewrites your own legend of demon cultivation. Your choices will lead to hundreds of vastly different life outcomes. Whether you become a carefree great demon or the King of Demons who shakes the three realms is entirely up to you.
Roguelike Reincarnation Gameplay: Open Exploration + Deck Building for Infinite Possibilities
The game centers around a reincarnation mechanic. Each reincarnation generates a random world map with over 20,000 tiles. Blessed lands and barbarian demon domains appear randomly, ensuring that every life offers a new map environment and encounter events.
Strategic Card Battles: The game features over a thousand cards, supporting the construction of more than fifty distinct battle styles. Combat incorporates Journey to the West elements such as clones, magical treasures, and transformation spells. Freely combine decks to create unique demon magic strategies, offering deep strategic gameplay.
Complete Demon Cultivation Survival & Progression: Players must manage survival attributes such as Lifespan, Satiety, and Stamina. Venture out to gather resources, seek spiritual lands for secluded breakthroughs, advance through cultivation stages like Foundation Establishment, navigate between various demon and immortal factions, unlock skill diagrams, collect rare treasures, and encounter numerous random events during exploration. A single choice can alter the course of your destiny.
Reincarnation Box Inheritance Mechanism: Even if your character perishes, it is not the end. Relying on the Reincarnation Box, players can retain and inherit powerful cards and talents from their previous life. Accumulate strength with each reincarnation, becoming stronger with every rebirth, constantly advancing towards the goal of becoming a Demon King.
Major Iteration for the Demo Version: Numerous Additions and Optimizations Launched
During the previous Playtest, the development team received valuable feedback from many players. This official Demo version has undergone significant content expansion and experience optimization based on that feedback. Previous Playtest saves can be carried over, allowing players to continue their demon cultivation journey. The previous Playtest has now concluded.

14. Added a quick battle feature for low-level enemies;
15. Added biographies for previous life characters during character creation.
Optimizations
1. Optimized UI art presentation;
2. Adjusted rewards for death results such as "Great Misfortune";
3. Optimized and adjusted some enemy skills;
4. Adjusted combat intentions;
5. Adjusted the UI structure of the Reincarnation Box;
6. Changed the flash screen color when Satiety and Stamina exceed their limits;
7. Reduced the rotation time of the Destiny Divination Disk;
8. The "Barbs" buff now reduces by 1 stack before each action;
9. "Otherworldly Reincarnation" now draws cards randomly from the discard pile.
Listening to Player Feedback, Continuously Polishing the Demon Cultivation Reincarnation Experience
The development team stated that every suggestion from players is a major driving force for polishing the game.
