Diablo 5 Director States Combat Still Emphasizes Build Planning, with the Right Setup Overcoming Any Challenge

Recently, Joe Shely, Senior Game Director for Diablo 5, discussed the new title's combat direction. He stated that while the game will still include some mechanics reliant on real-time execution, the overall focus is more on planning and commitment. The team's design principle is to allow players to overcome challenges through appropriate character builds.

《暗黑破坏神5》总监称战斗仍重视配装规划,合适构筑可克服任何挑战

Previously, Chris Wilson, former designer of Path of Exile and co-founder of Grinding Gear Games, shared his cautious expectations for Diablo 5. He expressed concern that the Diablo series has leaned increasingly toward arcade-style, action-oriented combat since its third installment, hoping the new entry would emphasize the gear-centric gameplay of earlier titles while predicting it might continue moving further toward action. It is currently unclear whether Shely's remarks were a direct response to Wilson.

Current information has not yet clarified the skill system, specific controls, or enemy mechanics in Diablo 5. The extent to which real-time action will feature in combat remains to be announced. The new title is scheduled for release in spring 2029, with its story set approximately 100 years after Diablo 4; safe zones are tied to a traveling companion party.
