Battlefield is undoubtedly one of the most famous FPS series in video game history. Since launching its first title in 2002, the series has consistently competed with Call of Duty. With its fast-paced FPS gameplay, Battlefield has attracted a large player base, and even today, many still regard it as their favorite shooting game franchise.
The Battlefield series spans multiple wars, even venturing into futuristic and entirely fictional conflicts. In addition to its beloved multiplayer modes, the series has consistently featured action-packed single-player campaigns, immersing players through distinctive storytelling.
Battlefield 1942
The first entry in the series was Battlefield 1942, set during World War II. WWII is one of the most classic war themes in video games, and Battlefield 1942 achieved massive success upon release, laying the foundation for this enduring franchise.
Battlefield Vietnam
Next came Battlefield Vietnam. At the time, games centered on the Vietnam War were relatively scarce, making this title quite distinctive. However, its exclusive release on Windows limited its potential player base to some extent.
Battlefield 2
Just one year later, Battlefield 2 was officially released. Although it was technically the third entry in the series, it adopted the name Battlefield 2 due to its direct continuity with Battlefield Vietnam. Like its predecessor, Battlefield 2 was released exclusively for Windows.
Battlefield 2142
A year later, the Battlefield series began exploring new directions. Battlefield 2142 became the first true futuristic warfare title in the franchise, transporting players directly to the year 2142. Battlefield: Bad Company
Subsequently, Battlefield: Bad Company further expanded the series' audience. It was the first Battlefield title to launch on consoles, supporting Xbox 360 and PS3. This console release allowed Battlefield to reach a vast number of players previously untouched by the franchise. Set in the near future, the game offered a more modern take compared to earlier war-themed entries, earning favor among many FPS enthusiasts.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2
The 2008 sequel, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, continued the unique storyline of its predecessor, further engaging series fans. Meanwhile, it was also the first Battlefield title to launch simultaneously on both consoles and PC, expanding its player base even further. For FPS players at the time, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was virtually a must-play title.
Battlefield 3
Battlefield 3 can be considered one of the titles that truly propelled the series to its peak. Released during the height of the Xbox 360 and PS3 era, it quickly became a focal point for players upon launch. Its massive multiplayer system made Battlefield 3 one of the most direct competitors to Call of Duty.
Battlefield 4
Although it didn't fully replicate the market performance of its predecessor, it remained a highly influential title. Battlefield Hardline
The subsequent release, Battlefield Hardline, was primarily aimed at Xbox One and PS4. Departing from the series' traditional military warfare theme, Hardline shifted the narrative focus to Miami police detectives, transforming players from soldiers into law enforcement officers. Although this experiment was quite novel, it ultimately failed to gain the widespread recognition EA had anticipated.
Battlefield 1 marked a major turning point in the series' history. After a period focused on modern and futuristic warfare, the franchise returned to historical battlefields, setting its stage during World War I. With relatively few large-scale shooters centered on WWI at the time, Battlefield 1 became one of the most popular games of 2016, thanks to its unique historical setting, stunning visuals, and fresh battlefield experience.
Battlefield V
The success of Battlefield 1 encouraged the series to continue exploring historical warfare, leading to the creation of Battlefield V. Although its name might suggest it is the fifth installment, this is not the case. Battlefield V brought the setting back to World War II and competed directly with Call of Duty: WWII during the same period, making the two titles major rivals in the FPS market at the time.
Battlefield 2042
One of the more recent entries in the series is Battlefield 2042. This time, Battlefield returned to futuristic warfare, though the overall style remained grounded in modern combat. The biggest difference from previous titles is that Battlefield 2042 eliminated the traditional single-player campaign, focusing entirely on multiplayer modes.
Battlefield 6
Battlefield 6 is the latest installment in the Battlefield series. Following the less-than-ideal launch of Battlefield 2042, many players feel that the new title helps the series recapture its former essence. While retaining the franchise's core features, the game also introduces new gameplay elements, including a free-to-play "Battle Royale" mode.
