Recently, Dutch police arrested a 24-year-old man from Amsterdam, suspecting him of being part of the cybercrime organization ShinyHunters. The group had previously claimed responsibility for the cyber intrusion at Rockstar Games this April. The FBI stated that the arrestee is "one of the alleged leaders" of ShinyHunters, but the organization has denied any connection to him.
Brett Leatherman, Assistant Director of the FBI's Cyber Division, also alleged that the arrestee and his accomplices have breached over 140 organizations since last year, obtaining at least $70 million in ransom payments. These figures are based on allegations by law enforcement agencies.
Regarding the intrusion this April, Rockstar Games stated at the time that the incident involved a third-party data breach, with a small amount of non-significant company information accessed, having no impact on company operations or players. The leaked materials reportedly included some financial records, such as the apparent weekly revenue of "GTA Online"; the authenticity and specific figures of these materials have not yet been confirmed.
The intrusion this April is distinct from the September 2022 "GTAVI" leak incident, and another batch of leaked content that appeared last month was not the same event. The relationship between the arrestee and ShinyHunters remains controversial. In a statement, the group denied any connection to the arrestee and claimed to have stolen information from the FBI after the arrest; this latter claim also remains unverified.
