Apple Goes All-In on Smart Home: Multiple New Products to Launch on October 13

According to media reports, Apple plans to officially launch its long-prepared smart home strategy on October 13, filling the long-standing gap in its whole-home smart hardware lineup. This also marks a significant expansion of Apple's consumer hardware product line under the leadership of new CEO John Ternus.

According to insiders, the core of this new product lineup is a brand-new self-developed smart home hub device. It will also include the first update to the HomePod mini since 2020, as well as the first iteration of the Apple TV set-top box since 2022.

The heavily promoted smart home hub debuting this time comes in two versions, internally codenamed J490 (desktop version) and J491 (wall-mounted version). The entire unit features a approximately 6-inch square display, suitable for various home installation and placement scenarios. Both models do not have built-in batteries and require external USB-C power supply.

The desktop version J490 features a gray aluminum body, paired with a circular metal base and an adjustable metal arm. Users can manually adjust the screen's tilt angle to suit different viewing and control perspectives.

The wall-mounted version J491 is designed specifically for wall installation. It features a slim square base below the screen, which integrates speakers and microphone components, balancing aesthetics with the needs for whole-home audio pickup and interaction.

It is reported that the iterated HomePod mini and Apple TV will maintain their existing classic exterior designs, with core upgrades focused on internal hardware and smart experience.

Both devices are equipped with more powerful new processors, providing ample computing power for the new generation of AI Siri.

Meanwhile, the new HomePod mini will add new color options such as green and pink, offering users more choices. Apple also plans to iterate and upgrade the larger-sized HomePod models in the future to完善 its smart speaker product line.

Notably, the core supporting Apple's whole-home intelligence is the new generation of AI Siri. The new Siri can link with user personal device data, support real-time online information retrieval, and smoothly handle whole-home smart device control, Apple ecosystem device linkage, and various application collaborative operations, addressing previous pain points such as rigid smart assistant interactions and weak connectivity.

Beyond hardware updates, Apple is continuously improving its smart home ecosystem. The company will continue to optimize the HomeKit platform, deepen cooperation with third-party hardware manufacturers, and launch more internet-connected home devices compatible with the new generation of AI Siri, enriching the variety of whole-home smart adaptations.

In fact, public reports show that Apple has been laying out its smart home strategy for over ten years. As early as 2014, Apple launched the HomeKit smart home platform, using the iPhone as the core control entry point for home devices. It subsequently incorporated HomePod and Apple TV into its smart hub system, gradually building a whole-home smart framework. However, due to insufficient smart interaction capabilities and the lack of dedicated hub hardware, progress in this area has been slow for a long time.
