Supermassive Games is bringing the most engaging local multiplayer aspect of "Protocol 8020" online. The developer announced on X that the online cooperative mode for this space horror game will officially launch this October.
"Protocol 8020" is the latest entry in Supermassive Games' choice-driven horror series. Unlike the teen-focused themes of haunted cabins or summer camp scares, this title features adult protagonists on a space colonization mission, with players guiding their decisions. As the crew approaches a candidate planet for colonization, a series of space horror events unfold. Like other Supermassive titles, "Protocol 8020" supports up to five players in its "Movie Night" mode to make decisions for the characters. However, the game launched without online functionality, meaning players interested in cooperative play had to gather locally in person.
"Protocol 8020" isn't Supermassive's scariest title, and its post-launch reception has been mixed. Last July, Supermassive underwent a round of layoffs, and the game was delayed from its original October 2025 release window to May 2026. Even after the game's launch, the studio initiated another round of layoffs this August, affecting approximately 75 employees.
Although a specific release date for the online co-op mode has not yet been confirmed, Supermassive stated that the feature will arrive in October, just in time for various Halloween-themed events during the spooky season.
