Star Fox for Switch 2 recently received a surprise update, adding new stages and features to its versus mode, along with several significant adjustments to other parts of the game. While it doesn't introduce major content like entirely new stages or modes, it serves as a reminder that the N64 classic remakes coming to Switch 2 in 2026 won't just be limited to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Version 1.2.0 officially launched last night, adding three new maps to versus mode: Katina, Sector X, and Venom. It also supports four-player split-screen battles on a single Switch 2. Rooms no longer automatically disband when the host leaves, and new item drops have been added during matches. For players who only experience the standard campaign, this update significantly improves damage feedback in boss battles, making visual cues much clearer when hitting bosses' weak points.
Although Fox McCloud appeared earlier this year in the billion-dollar box office hit The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, sales for this Star Fox remake haven't been particularly strong. Performance may have improved slightly during the holiday season, but without significant price cuts, it's hard for the game to attract much attention sitting next to Ocarina of Time on store shelves (currently priced at $50 for the digital version, despite its story mode lasting less than two hours).
Rumors currently suggest that a brand-new Star Fox game may also be in development. If true, players will soon be able to experience a more expansive adventure with McCloud and his team. In the meantime, the GameCube version of Star Fox Adventures, which joined the Switch Online library this summer, can temporarily satisfy players' cravings.
