Sony is providing developers with the QSSR image upscaling tool for the base PS5. Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei have received relevant updates, becoming the first games to test this technology.
QSSR stands for Quick Spectral Super Resolution and can be seen as a streamlined version of the PSSR technology used in the PS5 Pro. Upscaling technology allows games to render at a lower resolution first, then enhance the output image, striking a balance between visual quality and performance cost. The base PS5 lacks the dedicated machine learning hardware found in the PS5 Pro, so QSSR cannot be directly equated to the full PSSR solution.
Sony's blog confirmed that two games have received relevant updates. After testing, Digital Foundry considered the visual improvements in Marvel's Wolverine to be quite significant; the benefits for Ghost of Yōtei were relatively smaller, as its visuals on the base PS5 were already of a high standard.
QSSR will also be made available to other developers, who can decide whether to adopt it. Whether it can match the speed of common upscaling solutions like FSR 3, and whether it can bring visual benefits to more games, remains to be further tested.
