Wolverine Edition PS5 Slim Teardown Reveals New Motherboard with Easier CMOS Battery Replacement

Repair technician and modder Modyfikator89 disassembled a Wolverine Edition PS5 Slim and discovered it uses a new EDM-051 motherboard. The components on the board have been rearranged, and the CR2032 CMOS battery is now easier to remove and replace.

The internal layout of this unit has been simplified, with the HDMI signal retimer replaced by a more cost-effective and optimized implementation. This component helps maintain stable video signal output.

Regarding cooling, Modyfikator89 stated that the construction or materials of the new heatsink differ significantly from earlier PS5 Slim models, while the liquid metal containment structure around the processor is more similar to that of the PS5 Pro. Compared to the 2025 PS5 Slim with improved cooling, he believes Sony is still adjusting the design around the processor; the new containment method appears to reduce the area in direct contact with the liquid metal, helping to constrain its distribution.

Current conclusions are based on the teardown of a single unit, without confirmation across all production batches or empirical comparisons of temperature, noise levels, failure rates, or game frame rates. Sony has adjusted internal hardware in consoles before, and such changes may have minimal impact on actual gameplay experience. Whether existing PS5 Slim owners should upgrade cannot be determined solely based on this teardown.
