GTA VI: Lucia and Jason Both Have Flaws and Can Learn from Each Other

The writers of GTA VI discussed the character design of Lucia and Jason: both have vulnerable, resilient, and flawed sides; they make mistakes and learn from each other. LOVE Magazine shared excerpts from interviews with the creative team ahead of its upcoming issue.

Rupert Humphries, Rockstar's Senior Vice President of Narrative, stated that Lucia wants to secure a better life for herself and won't be stopped by obstacles. Writer Elizabeth Gauvey-Kern said the team wanted Lucia and Jason to sometimes make the right calls and sometimes make mistakes; these traits make them believable and suitable partners. Another writer, Alexa D'Agostino, believes that articulating each character's desires allows them to exhibit imperfections that, while somewhat clichéd, still feel authentic.

Humphries compares the duo to a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde. He says that to create a world reflecting contemporary times, the team needed to make it more exaggerated, crazier, and more blunt than reality. Fleeing for their lives, recklessly pushing criminal activities to the limit, also carries a certain hopeful naivety.

This situation is also tied to the game mechanics: police will identify characters and pursue them relentlessly, so players may need to switch cars or change clothes to evade pursuit. Many locals are heavily armed, which further limits the protagonist's individual power.

Discussing the "American Dream," Humphries believes it may now simply mean owning a home for one's family and paying off the mortgage, rather than achieving massive success. In his view, South Florida is precisely the frontier where such aspirations collide.
