Capcom introduced the REX project at its technical conference on October 2, planning to improve the existing RE Engine in stages to adapt it to next-generation game development. The company hopes to gradually develop it into a "game engine for the AI era," which is a long-term goal with no announced completion date at present.
Programmer Satoshi Ishida mentioned in his speech that as game scales expand, even simple development processes can consume a lot of time; with more participants involved, the engine also needs to be easier for different members to use. The REX plan therefore involves development efficiency, game performance, tools, and quality assurance, with Capcom choosing to continuously improve the RE Engine rather than building a new engine from scratch.
Some parts of the project will also be made available as open source for AI training. The related adjustments are also designed to make the engine system easier for developers to use and for AI to understand. The proposed "making games with AI" mainly points to optimization of the production process.
Capcom stated at its shareholder meeting in March 2026 that it would not directly include AI-generated assets in games, but is exploring ways for AI to improve efficiency and productivity in development areas such as graphics, sound, and programming.
