Sony Engineer Says PS5's QSSR Technology Can Basically Replace PSSR, Legacy Game Adaptation May Take Days

Sony has announced QSSR, an AI-based image upscaling technology for the base PS5. Daniel Craig, Chief Engineer of Graphics R&D at Sony Interactive Entertainment, stated that for games already supporting PSSR, the PS5 Pro's upscaling technology, QSSR can technically be swapped in directly, although actual adaptation may still take several days.

In an interview with Digital Foundry, Craig explained that the development team still needs to adjust game settings, such as modifying asset loading methods to keep higher-quality texture levels in memory. He believes that adding support to existing games is relatively easy and low-risk; he also looks forward to development teams considering both QSSR and PSSR from the early stages of a project. The fact that existing games can be adapted does not mean they will all receive updates.

QSSR has been implemented in Ghost of Yōtei and Marvel's Wolverine. Digital Foundry found that when targeting 4K in Marvel's Wolverine, QSSR incurs higher performance overhead compared to PSSR on PS5 Pro, with a frame rate difference of about 8 to 10 FPS during demanding cutscenes. When targeting 1440p, the time difference between the two is approximately 1.5 to 1.8 milliseconds. In the 60Hz performance mode, dynamic resolution scaling narrows the frame rate gap.

After tuning, the uncapped VRR performance mode in Ghost of Yōtei shows QSSR performance nearly identical to the original FSR 3 implementation. Digital Foundry emphasizes that this observation comes from a single title, and testing conditions such as input and output resolutions still need to be confirmed.
