Recently, on the Siping section of the Beijing-Harbin Expressway in Jilin Province, multiple passing motorists reported seeing an SUV driving against traffic in the overtaking lane with its high beams on.
The blinding lights approached head-on in the darkness, forcing normally driving vehicles to make frantic emergency maneuvers, creating a significant risk of head-on collisions and chain-reaction accidents.
Upon receiving the reports, highway traffic police immediately reviewed surveillance footage and collected dashcam videos, quickly identifying the vehicle involved. When officers called the driver to verify the situation, he not only refused to admit to his dangerous driving but also deliberately cut off contact in an attempt to evade accountability.
Investigating officers traveled to another location to apprehend the driver. According to his confession, he had accidentally missed his exit while driving and realized it only after traveling a considerable distance.
Unwilling to take a long detour, he simply turned his car around on the highway and drove against traffic, attempting to return to the original exit ramp. Even after being caught, he failed to fully grasp the severity of his actions, believing that as long as no accident occurred, it wasn't a serious violation.
This act placed the lives and property of numerous unrelated individuals on the highway in jeopardy, constituting a criminal offense under the Penal Code. In addition to imposing administrative penalties such as a fine and deducting 12 points from his driver's license, the police criminally detained the man on suspicion of endangering public safety by dangerous means.
