PlatinumGames Confirms Future Bayonetta Title in Development, but Original Team Is No Longer Involved

PlatinumGames boss Atsushi Inaba hinted that the studio plans to continue developing the Bayonetta series, but many of the original staff will not be involved.

In recent years, many key development talents have left this Osaka-based studio, including series founder and co-founder Hideki Kamiya. This may be the reason why PlatinumGames has not developed a new Bayonetta title for so many years. Meanwhile, Hideki Kamiya established his own studio, Clovers, and is collaborating with Capcom to develop Okami 2. The last entry in the Bayonetta series was the 2023 spin-off, Origins.

The Bayonetta IP is not owned by PlatinumGames, but is jointly owned by Sega and Nintendo.

In his first interview following the company's restructuring, Atsushi Inaba spoke with Famitsu and was asked about the future of the Bayonetta series—he strongly indicated that the series does have a future.

When asked about future Bayonetta games, he stated: "I cannot answer that question at the moment. We very much hope to further shape the character of Bayonetta and expand her world. Please look forward to how it will be presented in the future."

Since Hideki Kamiya and other key developers left PlatinumGames around 2023, the studio has not released another Bayonetta game. The studio has only participated as an outsourced developer in several titles, such as Team Ninja's Ninja Gaiden 4, as well as SE's Final Fantasy XVI, eFootball, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Currently, they are collaborating with Paramount Pictures to develop a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game.

In addition to Hideki Kamiya, other recent departures from PlatinumGames include:

Bayonetta Origins Director Abebe Tinari

Bayonetta 3 Director Yusuke Miyata

Astral Chain Director Takahisa Taura

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Director Kenji Saito

Anarchy Reigns and Resident Evil character designer Masaki Yamanaka

Bayonetta 2 Director Yusuke Hashimoto also left PlatinumGames to return to Capcom, where he participated in the recent reboot of the Onimusha series.

The original Bayonetta was directed by Hideki Kamiya, who recently announced that he would be rehiring several members of the series' original sound team. The Clovers studio has listed nearly 20 developers from Bayonetta 3 on its website.
