Recently, developer OverkillLabs2 unveiled the SoS-PS5 project, showcasing a test run of God of War: Ghost of Sparta on Windows PCs. The project leverages the still-in-development AnyPS5 tool, avoiding traditional full PS5 console emulation.
This solution allows the game's original x86-64 code to run directly on the PC processor, while adapting the executable for Windows. Graphics instructions are handled by Vulkan 1.3, with PS5 system libraries and GPU commands managed by a compatibility layer, similar in approach to Wine and DXVK.
During testing with a GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, developers observed around 60 frames per second in both the main menu and gameplay, with voice, music, and sound effects all functioning correctly. Control methods include keyboard and mouse, as well as controllers supporting XInput, DualShock, or DualSense.
Before running, users need to place the specified version of the original decrypted game files into the program directory. Initial data preparation takes about two minutes and involves approximately 25GB of content. Subsequent updates added resolution settings, allowing the default 4K to be adjusted to 1080p or 1440p, and fixed issues where moving the program folder would overwrite system files and registry entries.
Current testing only covers NVIDIA graphics cards on Windows 10 and Windows 11; performance on AMD and Intel GPUs remains unconfirmed. During the first playthrough, shader compilation may cause visual artifacts and brief stuttering; the opening video may also pause on a black frame for about ten seconds.
