DOOM: The Dark Ages will launch a new Slaughter Mode in November, available for free to players who own The Ancient Gods DLC. This endless survival mode is built upon the combat systems introduced in the expansion, pitting players against increasingly difficult, fully randomized enemy encounters.
Slaughter Mode unfolds in rounds, with enemies, bosses, and arenas randomly selected each round. There is no fixed endpoint; players can keep fighting as long as they survive. The game features a scoring system to track personal bests, but since the mode does not use backend servers, there will be no global leaderboards.
A checkpoint is set every 10 rounds, allowing players to redeem collected Skull Tokens. The progression system also includes cosmetic rewards, while weekly challenges provide additional goals for players looking to improve their scores.
This mode was developed by a dedicated strike team, which is also working on other development projects for the game. The developers stated that they created Slaughter Mode because the combat loop in The Ancient Gods has enough depth to support additional content beyond the campaign.
The new mode aims to give players more opportunities to practice and master the game's combat weapons, including the Crucible Blade. In addition to replaying the campaign or tackling Ultra-Nightmare and Hell difficulty for extra challenges, players now have a brand-new option.
Slaughter Mode does not require players to repeat the game's standard progression system. All previously unlocked upgrades will be retained, with the focus shifting to surviving more rounds and reaching reward milestones.
Developers describe this mode as a tribute to The Ancient Gods' combat system. Although its progression and meta-game structure incorporate some arcade-style elements, the core combat mechanics remain unchanged.
The development team also stated that player feedback from DOOM Eternal's Horde Mode served as a reference for the development of Slaughter Mode. More information about this mode and its rewards will be revealed in upcoming weekly livestreams.
